The Properties, Specifications, Monograph and Uses of Phenylephrine Hydrochloride or Phenylephrine HCl:

Phenylephrine Hydrochloride is a versatile sympathomimetic medication that primarily acts as a selective alpha-1 adrenergic receptor agonist. By directly stimulating these receptors, it causes the blood vessels to narrow. It is used in Nasal Decongestion, Eye Drops, Intravenous Vasopressor, Anorectal Care, etc.

Phenylephrine Hydrochloride BP Ph Eur Grade:
C9H14ClNO2 --- 203.7 CAS 61-76-7

Second identification: A, B, D, E
A. Specific optical rotation
B. Melting point: 171C to 176C.
Dissolve 0.3 g in 3 mL of water, add 1 mL of dilute ammonia and nitiate crystallization by scratching the wall of the tube with a glass rod. Wash the crystals with iced water and dry at 105C for 2 h.
C. Infrared absorption spectrophotometry.
D. Dissolve about 10 mg in 1 mL of water and add 0.05 mL of a 125 g/L solution of copper sulfate pentahydrate and 1 mL of a 200 g/L solution of sodium hydroxide. A violet colour is produced. Add 1 mL of ether and shake; the upper layer remains colourless.

Always seek medical attention after first aid measures are provided.

Inhalation: Remove to fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Do not use mouth-to-mouth method if victim inhaled the substance. Induce artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other proper respiratory medical device. Get medical attention.
Ingestion: Rinse mouth. Do not induce vomiting without medical advice. If vomiting occurs naturally, have victim lean forward to reduce the risk of aspiration. Never give anything by mouth to a victim who is unconscious or is having convulsions. Get medical attention.
Skin Contact: Wipe off excess material from skin then immediately flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Use a mild soap if available. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes. Get medical attention. Wash clothing before reusing. Thoroughly clean shoes before reusing them. For minor skin contact, avoid spreading material on unaffected skin.
